“This man has not only made children dream. He has given profoundness to the sea and unity to the planet.”Eric Orsenna, writer, academic

As part of the International Sea Festival Nautilus, the Evagoras & Kathleen Lanitis Foundation, in collaboration with the Oceanographic Center of the University of Cyprus and the ‘Rencontres de la Terre’, will present a tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The tribute, which will be held on the 5th of November at 10 am at the Evagoras Lanitis Centre, will host the honorary guest Pierre-Yves Cousteau, oceanographer, President of Cousteau Divers and the son of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Pierre, along with Dr. Evangelos Papathanassiou, the Research Director at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research will present and discuss Cousteau’s work and influence, as well as their concerns for the marine environment.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau was passionately in love with the Mediterranean Sea. Long before anyone he recognised the dangers threatening it, and throughout his life never ceased to inform and warn us about them. Alternative in his documentaries, with shocking images showing the grandeur of the underwater world, Cousteau was also a maestro in handling the narrative power of images. In the film “Le Sang de la Mer” (“Mediterranean: Cradle or Coffin?”), filmed in 1977, Cousteau shows without concessions the image of the future of Mediterranean ecosystems, if no measures are taken to protect them. Indeed, what have we kept, in 2012, from the great explorer’s legacy?
