“THE SHADOWS, German Expressionism in Cinema and its Legacy”

Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation in collaboration with Goethe Institut Cyprus are organising the exhibition, “THE SHADOWS, German Expressionism in Cinema and its Legacy”. The exhibition, which includes film screenings, lectures, important exhibits and audiovisual material from this milestone period in the history of cinema, will be inaugurated on Monday, November 6th, 2017 at 19:30 at the Kastelliotissa Hall, in old Nicosia. The exhibition will open for the public on Tuesday, November 7th, and will remain open until November 19th, with free entrance to all. Major Sponsor of the exhibition is the Ministry of Education and Culture and it is being realised in collaboration with Deutsche Kinematek and Murnau Foundation, Germany.

The exhibition – A cinematic journey through German Experissionism

Τhis interactive exhibition combines and includes exhibits, photographic material, documentaries, short and feature films, lectures and workshops in an especially designed hall, inspired by the aesthetics of expressionism.

Screenings

At the especially designed space of Kastelliotissa Hall, the visitors will have the chance to watch films, and excerpts of films. The entrance to all the screenings is free of charge.

Within the framework of the exhibition the following films will be screened:

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), DirRobert Wiene, 7/11 (20:30)

Golem (1920), DirPaul Wegener, 8/11 (19:30)

The adventures of Prince AchmedDirLotte Reiniger, 10/11 (20:30)

Nosferatu (1922), DirF. W. Murnau, 11/11 (19:30)

Faust (1926), Dir. Paul Wegener, 12/11 (19:30)

Τhe Hands of Orlac (1924), DirRobert Wiene, 16/11 (19:30)

Metropolis (1927), DirFritz Lang,  19/11 (19:00)

The silent film Metropoliswhich will be screening last and will conclude the activities of the exhibition on 19/11, will be combined with live, electronic music score, played out by musicians Pan and Isel.

Lectures

During the exhibition, acclaimed speakers and film academics will give lectures about the movement, its genesis, its characteristics, and how it influenced world cinema through the years, up until contemporary times.

Director Martin Jabs from Germany, will deliver the lecture, In Love with the Dark Side (7/11, 19:00) while Dr. Niki Louizidi, Lecturer, Athens School of Fine Arts and Emeritus Professor, Dept. of Fine Arts TEPAK, will deliver a lecture entitled, “POWER AND HYPNOSIS” from the Cabinet of Dr Caligari to the testament of Dr Mabuse (10/11, 19:00). The lectures are open to the public. Martin Jabs’s lecture will be given in the English language, while Dr Louizidou’s will be in Greek.
